180

Pregame:
Turn from evil and do good, and you will live in the land forever. Psalms 37:27

Gametime:
Back in 1987 I was coaching in Indiana at a small Christian High School in Marion IN. Marion was the mecca of basketball in Indiana at that time just finishing 3 state titles in a row. Lakeview Christian School was in their 3rd season as a varsity basketball program. We had just come off two winning seasons, but lost a number of players to graduation.

I had three players who transferred right before Christmas. Our team was struggling before break with a 4-7 record. I will never forget our first practice with these players. Not only did they change the complexion of our team, but they had to make personal changes for themselves to become a solid part of our team. All three came from situations where they were making wrong choices outside of school. They had to make a 180 to change for the better.

These changes did not change immediately, but slowly they committed to turn from their past and move forward. Our team changed too. We finished 18-11 that year and with these three players, plus other talent we went 28-3 the following year. Their 180 change made a big difference for our team and their personal lives.

I am happy to say all these years later, all three players are working hard to follow Christ. They all had their ups and downs, but each of them are pursuing Christ now. What a blessing that is to see as a coach today. I too, need to make a 180 in my life as well. After visiting the doctor this week I was reminded that my body and life needs to change to live a more healthy lifestyle. My prayer is that my 180 will lead to 180 (in weight). Do you need to make an about face in your life? Do a 180 today to follow Christ fully. You will be forever grateful you did.

Overtime:
1. What you been on a team that turned it around quickly…what was the difference?
2. What does it mean to you to do a 180 in life?
3. Why does God want you to turn from your past and turn to Him today?
