You Can Have Your Opinion

I was sent an article today about religion in sports today. Here is the link to the article:
http://blogs.usatoday.com/oped/2009/10/column-and-id-like-to-thank-god-almighty.html

It was an interesting article, but once again it is based on someone’s opinion, though it was researched, he still is siting his opinion. Everyone has a right to their opinion. We still live in a free country (I think), but people cast their opinions on everything in life. From their favorite foods to their favorite teams, we all have our preferences. However when it comes to faith or as some call it religion, people’s opinions are stronger than ever.

I have my opinion on faith in sports and I firmly believe it is doing much more good that anything wrong or destructive. However, my opinion on faith runs far beyond sports. From the beginning of time (countless opinions on that too) people have taken sides on every issue. Adam and Eve got it all started in the garden, eat of the tree or not even though they were told what would happen if they did. Since then our decisions each day are based on our opinions of every situation. We choose by what others think or say, choose by research and knowledge, or we simply do want we want to do. In any case, we believe based on what we know or hear from others.

When it comes to religion in sports or faith-based anything, I base MY opinion on one thing…God’s word. For me it starts with the first four words…In the beginning God…you can choose for yourself what YOU believe but someone will be right and someone will be wrong in the end. For thousands of years this has been the case. There are some faith believers who bash others for what they believe, but that was not Jesus’s methods. He spoke the truth and challenged everyone to find out for themselves what they will truly believe.

You have a right to your opinion that is true, but in the end, once again someone will be right and someone will be wrong. If my opinion is wrong I will realize it one day in the future, however if my opinion about faith in Jesus Christ is correct then every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that He is Lord. You have your right to believe as you believe, but for me and my house we will believe in God.

I get bashed for being a Notre Dame fan, I get bashed for being a Reds fan, I get bashed for being a Hoosiers fan, and countless other things in sports, but who cares they can think how they want…sports is not who I am, it is what I do ministry through and as long as there is sport I will continue to proclaim the name of Jesus Christ and use every tool in God’s word to make coaches and athletes one day better.

My devotional books are in stores and online now. Stores like Barnes and Nobles, Borders, and many Christian bookstores. Online at www.fcagear.com, www.christianbooks.com, and www.amazon.com.

  1. Hi Jere,

I was pleased to read this about Judd. I am proud of him!! I have been running since Coach Bullock instilled in me a love for it at Taylor!! I praise God everyday that for the most part I am injury free and able to run. I don’t take that health for granted. Tell Judd to keep up the good work!! :)

  2. Best wishes to your brother and to you!

  4. Jere,
I send to you enthusiastic praise for your gift of writing.
Your perspective on what life, death and heaven is about is brilliant and heart warming. Believers and none believers need to read this message for it would plant a seed for the non believers and inspire the believers. Thank you for the Share!
    Happy belated birthday to Luke.
    God Bless
